Community questionnaire: Count an equally likely event

Community questionnaire investigation: count an equally likely event. Change the quantities, follow the motion, and explain the result using the displayed mathematical relationship.

Predict what will happen, press Play, then pause and explain what changed. Every control also works without playback.

Every outcome is equally likely and exactly one is selected. Favorable count is 1–9 and total count is 10–30, ensuring the event is a valid subset. The marker's deterministic path is only a visual guide.

Understand what you are seeing

The idea behind the motion.

For a finite collection of equally likely outcomes, a probability is the fraction that satisfy the event. Counting favorable outcomes is not enough without naming the full sample space. The scanning marker inspects known outcomes and is not a random experiment. This investigation begins with favorable outcomes = 1; total equally likely outcomes = 19. Treat the named setting as a constructed classroom model, then explain which relationships would still hold if its numbers changed.

A relationship to keep

P(event) = favorable outcomes / total outcomes

Read the symbols alongside the explanation. A diagram shows the relationship; the assumptions tell you when it applies.

  1. STEP 1

    Represent the given quantities

Count the amber event outcomes and the full grid, which includes both event and non-event outcomes.

  2. STEP 2

    Follow the changing model

Playback inspects each outcome in order. It does not simulate repeated draws or estimate a probability from frequencies.

  3. STEP 3

    Check and explain the relationship

Divide favorable by total, then find the complement by subtracting the probability from one.

Your turn to explain

Make a prediction. Test your reasoning.

Community questionnaire: An equally likely collection contains 1 favorable outcomes out of 19. Find the probability.

Use the values specified in the question. Reset restores the initial values for this investigation.

Compare your explanation

1/19 = 5.263%. Its complement is 94.737%.
