Balance ledger: Follow decimal place-value scaling
Balance ledger investigation: follow decimal place-value scaling. Change the quantities, follow the motion, and explain the result using the displayed mathematical relationship.
Predict what will happen, press Play, then pause and explain what changed. Every control also works without playback.

Understand what you are seeing
The idea behind the motion.
Scientific notation separates a number into a coefficient from one up to but not including ten and a power of ten. Moving between powers changes place value without changing the coefficient. Negative exponents represent small positive quantities, not negative measurements. This investigation begins with coefficient = 3; power of ten = 0. Treat the named setting as a constructed classroom model, then explain which relationships would still hold if its numbers changed.
A relationship to keep
value = coefficient × 10ᵉ, 1 ≤ coefficient < 10
Read the symbols alongside the explanation. A diagram shows the relationship; the assumptions tell you when it applies.
- STEP 1
Represent the given quantities
Read the coefficient and the integer exponent as separate pieces of one product.
- STEP 2
Follow the changing model
Playback scales by ten or one tenth at each whole step, starting with the coefficient at exponent zero.
- STEP 3
Check and explain the relationship
Reconstruct the full value and verify that the coefficient remains in the standard scientific-notation range.
Your turn to explain
Make a prediction. Test your reasoning.
Balance ledger: Write the value of 3 × 10^(0) as a number.
Use the values specified in the question. Reset restores the initial values for this investigation.
Compare your explanation
3; multiply the coefficient by 10 for each of the 0 exponent steps.
