Grade 12 · Implicit circle tangents
Implicit circle tangents: A fourth-quadrant tangent
Implicit circle tangents: investigate a fourth-quadrant tangent with circle radius r = 3; final angle (degrees) = 330.
Predict what will happen, press Play, then pause and explain what changed. Every control also works without playback.

Understand what you are seeing
The idea behind the motion.
An implicit equation describes both halves of a circle without choosing one as a function of x. Differentiating relates the tangent slope to the current coordinates. At y=0 the tangent is vertical, so the slope formula has no finite value even though the circle itself remains smooth. This investigation starts with Circle radius r = 3; Final angle (degrees) = 330. Predict the result before playing, then change one parameter while keeping the other fixed to test the reason for the change.
A relationship to keep
x²+y²=r²; dy/dx=−x/y when y≠0
Read the symbols alongside the explanation. A diagram shows the relationship; the assumptions tell you when it applies.
- STEP 1
Set up the mathematical model
Read the radius and verify the point satisfies x²+y²=r². The starting case is “A fourth-quadrant tangent.”
- STEP 2
Follow the changing quantity
Rotate the radius to the selected angle and compare it with the tangent, which is perpendicular to that radius.
- STEP 3
Explain and test the result
At a horizontal-axis crossing, explain why a vertical tangent is not a missing point of the circle. Distinguish an undefined dy/dx from a nonsmooth curve.
Your turn to explain
Make a prediction. Test your reasoning.
Keep Circle radius r = 3; Final angle (degrees) = 330. Pause the timeline at 60%. Given x coordinate = -2.853, calculate y coordinate, radius, slope −x/y. Show the substitution into the displayed formula.
Use the values specified in the question. Reset restores the initial values for this investigation.
Compare your explanation
The point is (3 cos(198°), 3 sin(198°))=(-2.85317,-0.927051), with squared radius 9. Implicit differentiation gives dy/dx=−(-2.85317)/(-0.927051)=-3.077684. Results: y coordinate: -0.927; Radius: 3; Slope −x/y: -3.078. Decimal values are rounded; retain the original parameters when checking.
