01 · Read and understand

What you will learn

  • Derive triangle area from two sides and their included angle.
  • Justify the conclusion "Area=10 square units" using the stated assumptions.

Before you start

Sine and triangle area.

Keep paper nearby. Read the question once for the context, then again to identify what is known and what you need to find.

Start with a question

Two sides are five and eight units with included angle 30°. Find the area.

Why this math matters

Derive triangle area from two sides and their included angle. This worked micro-lesson connects a precise mathematical condition to a conclusion you can check. The transfer task asks you to change the setting and decide which parts of the reasoning still apply.

Set up the model

A useful answer starts with clear assumptions:

  • The angle lies between the two stated sides.
  • Side lengths are positive and use matching units.

02 · Work through the example

Follow the reasoning, one step at a time.

Try to predict the next step before reading it. After each calculation, explain why the operation makes sense and how it helps answer the original question.

Question

Start with the question

Two sides are five and eight units with included angle 30°. Find the area.

Before you calculate

Read what is known and what you need to find. Make a prediction before moving to the first calculation.

Your device’s reduced-motion setting keeps each phase still. Manual controls remain available. The full written solution stays below.

  1. Build the model

Use one side as base eight; height=5sin30°

The perpendicular component of the other side supplies the altitude.

  2. Work through the mathematics

    Area=(1/2)·8·5sin30°

The base-height formula becomes the included-angle formula.

  3. Check the conclusion

    Area=10 square units

Since sin30°=1/2, the product is one half of eight times 2.5.

The result

Area=10 square units

Since sin30°=1/2, the product is one half of eight times 2.5.

Common mistakes to catch

  • A nonincluded angle cannot be inserted into this formula unchanged.
  • Area uses square units.

03 · Practice independently

Try it before revealing the answer.

Use paper or a calculator as needed. Write your units and reasoning, then open the hint or explanation to check your approach.

Practice 1

What area results if the included angle is 150°?

Show a hint

Sine has the same value.

Reveal answer and explanation

Ten square units

The obtuse triangle's perpendicular height has the same magnitude.

Practice 2

For fixed side lengths, which included angle maximizes area?

Show a hint

Maximize sine between zero and π.

Reveal answer and explanation

90°

Sine reaches one at a right angle.

Take the idea with you

Compare several hinged shapes with fixed side lengths and changing opening angle.

04 · Reflect and continue

Can you explain it in your own words?

Before moving on, explain the main idea without looking at the worked example. Try both practice questions, check your reasoning, and name one mistake you now know how to avoid. Return to a step if you still need support.
