What you will learn
- Compute a signed residual and distinguish interpolation from extrapolation.
- Justify the method and check its domain, units, or logical conditions.
Before you start
Algebraic equations, ratios, angle and area facts, and basic coordinate geometry.
Keep paper nearby. Read the question once for the context, then again to identify what is known and what you need to find.
Start with a question
A classroom model predicts score ŷ=4h+50 from study hours h. For h=6, the observed score is 80. Find the residual.
Why this math matters
Inspect residuals and the observed input range before trusting a predictive line. The example connects a stated condition to a conclusion and then checks whether the result satisfies that condition.

Set up the model
A useful answer starts with clear assumptions:
- Use the real-number system and the restrictions or data model stated in the question unless another domain is specified.
- Treat provided measurements as exact classroom-model values unless an approximation or uncertainty is stated.
02 · Work through the example
Follow the reasoning, one step at a time.
Try to predict the next step before reading it. After each calculation, explain why the operation makes sense and how it helps answer the original question.

Question
Start with the question
A classroom model predicts score ŷ=4h+50 from study hours h. For h=6, the observed score is 80. Find the residual.
Before you calculate
Read what is known and what you need to find. Make a prediction before moving to the first calculation.

Your device’s reduced-motion setting keeps each phase still. Manual controls remain available. The full written solution stays below.
Represent the conditions
Predicted score = 4(6)+50=74
Evaluate the model at the observed input.
Develop the calculation
Residual = observed − predicted
This sign convention marks observations above the line as positive.
Check and interpret
Residual = 80−74=6 points
The model underpredicts this observation by six; that alone does not establish why the difference occurred.
The result
Residual = 80−74=6 points
The model underpredicts this observation by six; that alone does not establish why the difference occurred.
Common mistakes to catch
- Use observed minus predicted consistently.
- A fitted association does not prove study hours alone cause the observed score changes.
03 · Practice independently
Try it before revealing the answer.
Use paper or a calculator as needed. Write your units and reasoning, then open the hint or explanation to check your approach.
Practice 1
At h=3 the observed score is 58. Find the residual.
Show a hint
Compute the prediction before subtracting.
Reveal answer and explanation
−4 points
The prediction is sixty-two, so 58−62=−4.
Practice 2
If the line was fitted only for h from 0 to 8, what is risky about predicting at h=25?
Show a hint
That input is outside the observed range.
Reveal answer and explanation
It is extrapolation and may be unrealistic
The linear pattern may not continue, and a bounded score can make the unbounded prediction impossible.
Take the idea with you
Inspect residuals and the observed input range before trusting a predictive line.
04 · Reflect and continue
Can you explain it in your own words?
Before moving on, explain the main idea without looking at the worked example. Try both practice questions, check your reasoning, and name one mistake you now know how to avoid. Return to a step if you still need support.
